As has recently been announced on the main kernel.org page, the main kernel.org server (known as “hera”) was recently compromised by an unknown intruder. This person was able to gain “root” access, meaning they had the full run of the system. Speaking as just one of many members of the kernel development community, I can say that this episode is disturbing and embarrassing. But I can also say that there is no need to worry about the integrity of the kernel source or of any other software hosted on the kernel.org systems.

Kernel.org is, of course, the home for the Linux kernel. Many other projects live there as well. On the face of it, that would make kernel.org a tempting target for an attack. What self-respecting cracker wouldn’t want an opportunity to place some special code into the Linux kernel? Such code would, over time, find its way into millions of machines worldwide. The injection of backdoors or other malware is a concern for any software maintainer - open source or otherwise - but it turns out that we are well protected against that sort of attack. If kernel developers worked by shipping simple files of source code around, they might well be vulnerable to malware added by an intruder. But that is not how kernel development is done. The code for the kernel (and for many other projects) is managed with the “git” source code management system. And git does not allow the code to be modified by third parties without people knowing about it.

It’s worth taking a moment to look at how that works. A cryptographic “hashing function” is a mathematical formula which boils the contents of a file down to a small number. “Small” is relative; git’s hash function produces 160-bit numbers, which are quite big by...

I am very excited to share with the community and industry that MeeGo is among the first operating system offerings that have officially been certified by GENIVI to be compliant. This is another great milestone in the collaboration between GENIVI and MeeGo. In July 2010, The Linux Foundation and GENIVI announced that MeeGo is the platform of choice for GENIVI. Both GENIVI software releases, Apollo (October 2010) and Borg (May 2011) utilize MeeGo IVI releases 1.1 and 1.2, respectively, as their foundation and add GENIVI-specific packages.

Today is a big day for the Linux community. I’m writing this from Vancouver, B.C. where Users, SysAdmins, developers and business executives have gathered for the third annual LinuxCon and the official celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Linux.

This week is about celebrating as a community the accomplishments of the last 20 years and to collaborate on how we advance Linux for another 20 years. We’re lucky to have the foremost experts on these topics on hand at LinuxCon: Linux creator Linus Torvalds, Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, legal authority Eben Moglen, IBM Linux leader Dan Frye and others. Renowned Internet and society author Clay Shirky will share how Linux and collaborative development have spread into other areas of culture and what that means for the future of technology.

These are just a few examples of the speakers and content we’re looking forward to today through Friday. It’s also a natural time to reflect on how Linux user behaviors have changed over the last two decades. We recently conducted a survey of our registered LinuxCon attendees and learned some interesting things about the differences between Linux usage a decade ago versus how...

Twice a year, the Top500 Project publishes its list of the fastest supercomputers in the world. In the last announcement, we continue to see Linux dominating the list. This is nothing new since Linux has been dominating since the mid-2000s. In fact, Linux share in supercomputing looks a lot like Microsoft’s historical share of the desktop market. I thought it would be interesting to take a step back and look at the performance capability of these computers as a whole and also how the rise of Linux is mirroring the geographical expansion of supercomputers.

LinuxCon Japan 2011 just concluded in early June. While many industry and cultural groups have canceled scheduled conferences and performances in Japan due to the triple tragedy of March 11, the Linux Foundation moved forward with its annual meeting. Turnout was great – reportedly 500 strong – and the technical program was strong. There were also some great opportunities for socializing and renewing acquaintances. The Compliance Mini-Summit drew an impressive audience of about 40 people for a four-hour program that included presentations and a panel session from open source compliance leaders: Shane Coughlan of Opendawn discussed the evolution of FOSS governance Sunil Kumar D and Timo Jokiaho of Huawei shared a corporate perspective on GPL compliance Bill McQuaide of Black Duck Software and Steve Grandchamp of OpenLogic, respectively, shared their insights into corporate adoption of FOSS and their wisdom and experience about FOSS compliance and governance Phil Koltun of the Linux Foundation discussed ways to get started with a compliance program Tsugikazu Shibata, a member of the LF Board of Directors, joined Bill and Steve to provide a Japanese perspective on compliance program implementation. LinuxCon Japan also enjoyed a lively kickoff session, with Linus Torvalds reminiscing about 20 years of Linux kernel work, as prompted by questions from Greg Kroah-Hartman and the audience.   Part of the dialogue was...

Today we announced the full schedule for LinuxCon North America that will take place in Vancouver from August 17 - 19th. This year we had even more of a challenge than usual in putting together the program. Why? There were so many great submissions. (I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who submitted a talk and please don’t be discouraged if you didn’t make it this year. You had a lot of competition and we would love to see your submissions at subsequent events or in subsequent years. Check our events schedule for more events in Europe, Brazil and elsewhere.) This year is the 20th anniversary of Linux, which we have already been celebrating with a special video and contests. But this year’s speaker line up for LinuxCon will be a celebration on its own, with topics and speakers from across the industry, across the community and across the globe. While we do have a focus on enterprise Linux...

Alexander Swen is a true Linux evangelist. Since 1996, when he started using Linux-Mandrake on his home computers, he’s been happily converting friends and family to the OS—even getting his parents on board. “I think everyone should use Linux,” he says. “And I want to help promote it any way I can.”

More and more companies turn to Linux and other open source software for great functionality and competitive advantage in product development.  When they do so, most organizations recognize their responsibility to comply with open source license obligations.  They embrace the responsibility as part of using open source.  Unfortunately, some companies remain unaware of their obligations or choose to ignore them.  Others are simply daunted by the task of putting a compliance program in place.  They needn’t be:  There are lots of resources to turn to for guidance.  The Linux Foundation has created comprehensive training courses on compliance that are delivered confidentially onsite to help companies meet their responsibilities.  We also have instructive white papers and a great checklist of compliance actions compiled from experiences of industry-best compliance programs, and the FOSSBazaar governance...

Of the many questions Linus Torvalds must be tired of answering, one of the top 10 has to be "when will we have a 2.8 kernel?" (Or some variation thereof.) Naturally, a big fuss wouldn't do for announcing the decision to name a kernel 2.8 — so it's been slipped in as a postscript to the announcement that the next kernel will have a short merge window.

At The Linux Foundation, we are lucky to work directly with many of the most innovative companies in the world. We all know the big names like Google, IBM and Intel but as Linux use has expanded into new segments - especially in the embedded industry - we get to work with smaller, but no less innovative companies. The best part is helping them make the most of Linux by getting involved in the community. As an example, we recently completed software compliance  and community involvement training at set-to-box manufacturer Altech UEC. We traveled to South Africa to help them understand how to deploy Linux and open source software to power their set-top-box technology. Altech made use of The Linux Foundation’s  Compliance Training resources to educate their developers and their executives on the process...

Some years, the openSUSE Weekly News, only was edited and published in the Wiki. Now, after some time the team is looking forward to break new ground.

The new ground are new formats. editing for
. Also, translations are well done. The disadvantage, however, that an interested reader must surf again and again to a particular website, and these must be read online.

To extend our offer, we have already started in the middle of last year to convert the wikicode in HTML code, and published it in full on openSUSE's News platform news.opensuse.org. This is now offered readers the opportunity to subscribe to the RSS feed, and thus any time if the reader wishes it to be available.

The wiki is currently common good for
editingAfter the openSUSE Conference 2010 now the idea was born, to extract the Weekly News from the Wiki, and to set up a new format, namely XML. This format had the advantage for the team now, the content has already been structured to capture and we were the first to directly create from the XML code out of HTML code. We developed our XSL style sheets, XML files for each section (Announcements, In the community, ...), and also scripts that made it possible for us to address the complex processes. Recently, we even have a script in our repertoire, with which we can export the XML code into a PDF document. Thus, our readers another way, your openSUSE Weekly News in a popular eBook format have read.

In the medium to long term, we plan to offer even MOBI.

To put it also to allow more members of the editorial team to work on the XML sources, we have an SVN repository at BerliOS claimed, so that is available to all registered in the repository.

All of our style sheets and XML files and the scripts are under the CC-BY-SA license, and we share them upon request to members of other Weekly News Team.

Community is a deeply personal experience. While write communities such as Open Source get together to make things (as opposed to read communities who consume content together), the attraction and thrill is only partially in the collaboration.

A little while back I blogged about wanting to reconnect with our ethos. In a continuation of that theme I am keen to talk about stories. I have talked about stories quite a bit in my writings on community management (particularly so in my book The Art of Community). Stories are important entities in communities – they are vessels in which we share ideas, lessons we have learned, our experience and more. Many stories come laced with these underlining nuggets of wisdom that we then take aware and help us to refine and improve how we interface with the world and the people around us. Stories...
